We
got hooked on Heirloom Tomatoes after reading Carolyn Male's 100 Heirloom
Tomatoes for the American Garden. This is a woman who loves her
tomatoes! According to Ms. Male, the Seed Savers Yearbook lists
several thousand heirloom varieties! As she so rightly points out,
taste continues to be a personal experience. Beyond that, other
factors - soil, weather, type of fertilization - influence the appearance
and taste of just about every plant, including heirloom tomatoes. We
usually offer between twenty-five and forty varieties of organic heirloom
tomato starts for the home gardener. If you're interested in
exploring more, click on the Tomato Fest link below and start your own!
You'll enjoy Gary Ibsen's fabulous site www.tomatofest.com
and be amazed at the 500 varieties of certified organic heirloom tomato
seeds he and his wife, Dagma, grow and sell, many of them sourced from
small family farms from all over the world. Like us, he and Dagma
are advocates of organic, sustainable farming. He is also the author of The
Great Tomato Book, a great read for tomato lovers everywhere. If
you're anywhere near Carmel, California check out the Carmel Tomato Fest -
it looks like a fantastic time!
